Town Voter Methods

By Phone and Online

E-voting by telephone, 1 (877) 446-5146, and online, antigonish.isivote.com, begins on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 8 am. Each resident will be informed by letter regarding e-voting and will receive a unique PIN in their letter to vote with. If you did not receive a letter, you can call (902) 318-3309. Voting closes October 19, 2024 at 7 pm.

For those that want to use a public computer, the Antigonish Town & County Library has a computer kiosk set up for online voting as of October 9th.

Advanced Voting

The first advanced polls are on Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 12 pm to 8 pm at 149 Church Street, Unit 4 (Mall Annex). The second advanced polls are on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at the same location from 12pm to 8 pm.

Election Day Voting

Election day voting will be on October 19, 2024 at Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School from 8 am to 7 pm.

County Voter Methods

Advanced Voting

The first advanced polls are on Saturday, October 12, 2024 from 12 pm to 8 pm. The second advanced polls are on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 from 12 pm to 8 pm.

Election Day Voting Location

Election day voting will be on October 19, 2024 from 8 am to 7 pm.

District 1 and 2 have sub-districts (1A, 1B, and 2A, 2B). Voters in district 1 and 2 are only on the voter list at one of the two locations. To see if you're in sub-district A or B of your district, you can check here.

Voting By Proxy

If you will be out of the municipality on October 12, 15, or 19 then you are welcomed to vote by proxy.

Call Linda at the municipal office on beech hill road, (902) 863-1117, or visit the municipal office before election day.

You will be given 2 forms. One pertaining to the person who will be absent, and the other to the proxy voter. The forms can be taken home or filled out at the office, but must be returned to the municipal office when complete. The proxy voter will then be given a piece of paper indicating they can proxy vote for the original voter. This paper must be shown when voting.

Ballot Information

Electoral System

The Town and County of Antigonish use the First Past the Post voting system. For the Town, there may be 3 separate ballots for the 3 separate voting options.

Mayor & Conseil Scolaire Acadien Provincial (CSAP)

There is 1 Town Mayor seat and 1 CSAP seat, to which you may choose one candidate for each by marking an "x" in the space provided.

Town Councilors

There are 6 council seats, to which you may mark an "x" next to the names of your choice on the ballet. You may not choose more than 6, but you may choose less.

County Councilors

There is 1 County Councilor seat per district, to which you may choose one candidate by marking an "x" in the space provided.

Voting Requirements

Requirements

• You must be 18 years or older on the first advanced polling day on October 12, 2024

• You must be a Canadian citizen on the first advanced polling day on October 12, 2024.

• You must have lived in Nova Scotia for at least six months before the advanced polling day on October 12, 2024 (six months before is April 11, 2024).

• You must be a resident of Antigonish before the first advanced polling day on October 12, 2024.

• Students may only vote where they determine their home to be; whether that be where they attend school or where their family home is. They may only vote in one of those locations. Election officials may require students to demonstrate their choice (e.g. health card, license).

• CSAP voter eligibility is someone who is an "entitled person". They must be a Canadian citizen who's first language learned and still understood is French, or who received their primary school instruction in Canada in a French-first language program, or of whom any child has received or is receiving primary or secondary school instruction in Canada in a French-first-language program.

What are the representative's responsibilities?

Mayor & Warden

Similar to a council member but has additional responsibilities while acting as the public face of the municipality. Some duties include acting as the chair at council meetings, consulting with the CAO to set meeting agendas, calling special meetings for issues that require immediate attention, attending ceremonial functions, and consulting with government.

The mayor is elected by voters, while the warden is appointed by the county council.

Deputy Mayor & Deputy Warden

A council member that acts as the mayor or warden in their absence.

Selected and appointed by their respective council members.

Town Councilor & County Councilor

Participate in council meetings and committees; discussing, debating, and voting on various topics such as municipal by-laws and policies, budget and financial plans, and setting tax rates. They should be representing the public interest while setting the future direction for the municipality. Councilors should regularly speak with, and learn from their constituents, raising relevant issues at the council table.
